The energy coming out of this week’s guest, Jyll Hoyrup is palpable. Her joy for living jumps out at you as you read through her experience of moving her life to Belize.
Jyll is a psychic healer and coach who runs the free weekly video show, ‘Manifest It’, a group manifesting session with people dialling in from all over the world to focus and amplify their intentions in a loving and supportive environment.
Best of all, Jyll is out there living the absolute dream – she’s escaped the corporate world to live full time in a tropical paradise – so already you KNOW she’s doing life right!
If you’ve been dreaming of packing it all in and running away to your dream destination, then read on as Jyll gets real about how she’s done it and the realities of expat life.
MHL: How do you connect in to the feeling of freedom in your life?
Jyll Hoyrup: In my life, freedom is all about truly living by my own means, being led by my inner guidance and dreams, not the constraints of family, friends or social ‘shoulds’.
I have made freedom an absolute priority and in doing so I’ve designed a life where I can live consciously and with purpose – and I mentor others to do the same. In 2014 I left behind my corporate life in Seattle to live in the small rustic village of Placencia, a laid back beach town on the Caribbean coast of Belize in Central America. Now, taking a vacation doesn’t come with the dread of having to return and “get back to the grind”. When I take a holiday these days it feels like an extension of my every day life, I don’t have to use the time just detoxing from my everyday routine, I can enjoy the time away and be open to the lessons the new environment has for my outlook and personal wisdom.
MHL: What was your life like before you made the move to Belize?
Jyll Hoyrup: Before moving to Belize my life was very financially fulfilling, but that’s about it. I had a “great job” that allowed me time and money to travel a handful of times each year, including an annual 2-3 week trip. I lived in my hometown of Kirkland, Washington, in a cute condo which was a 5-minute walk from a beautiful lake. My money situation was very comfortable, I spent my money as I pleased while living well below my means. I had great friends around me, some of whom joined me in following a disco band around (love me some disco dancing!).
There was nothing ‘wrong’ with my life, in many ways it was pretty great, but deep down I felt unfulfilled.
I constantly asked myself, “Is THIS it?” I felt like I was just existing. Each day was the same (Ground Hog Day anyone?). Inside I was SCREAMING to live a life of purpose and passion. Going to a job every day and living in gray and dreary Seattle was NOT doing it for me!
MHL: It sounds like everything was going OK on the surface. What was it that pushed you into packing it all in? So many of us dream of moving somewhere tropical, like Belize, where the life is easy. How did you make it all happen?
Jyll Hoyrup: I definitely didn’t wake up one day and just move out of the blue. It took years for me to finally take the leap.
As a teenager I lived in Egypt for 3 years and I’ve had the travel bug ever since. I always saw myself living out of the U.S. however college, marriages, divorces, jobs…life kept happening.
In 2007 I started traveling solo, aged 37. I was tired of wanting to travel but not going because I didn’t have anyone to accompany me. Finally I booked a trip, a very last minute expensive Spring Break trip to Cancun, Mexico. But instead of satisfying my urge to travel, that trip actually put a fire under me.
I started applying to jobs within the company in warmer climates (Middle East, Hawaii and other States) – to no avail.
In 2012 I went back to Mexico, Playa del Carmen. I fell in love with the vibrant energy of Mexico. It was as if all of life’s possibilities were being shown to me. I wanted to stay forever, but I had a condo full of possessions back home and more than a little figuring to do! So, I went home and started to downsize my life, preparing myself for a leap.
It was time, I knew I had to change my mindset and figure out HOW to move, instead of just dreaming.
Over the next 18 months I travelled to Tulum and Punta Allen Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama. In my travels I kept meeting real people who had done brave things like I wanted to do. It was very empowering and took away my excuses. Every vacation I’d tell my co-workers I probably wouldn’t be back.
The call of adventure was too strong to ignore.
MHL: What was your journey to where you are now?
Jyll Hoyrup: In 2013 I first wanted to try living in Costa Rica, but things weren’t quite right. I got stuck where I think a lot of people get stuck – the HOW. I walked around the beach town, knowing only a handful of Spanish words, wondering HOW would I live there. How was I going to make money? I saw a place that offered Reiki sessions and were charging $20 USD an hour. WHAT? I charged $100 USD an hour at the time so this made me wonder how I would be able to support myself given that I only had a few thousand dollars saved. There was a lot of fear around not knowing the answers, and it paralyzed me.
I came back to Seattle a bit disheartened and spent 5 months in a stupor. When I pulled myself together again I decided to go all in. I set about getting rid of everything, sell my condo, and save every cent. I trashed, donated or stored all my worldly belongings. This not only freed up physical space, but energetic space too.
My intuition was telling me to go to Belize. The official language is English and I can drink the tap water in the village I’d chosen. Once I’d bought my plane ticket my Intuition kicked into high gear. I kept receiving messages that I would not return from Belize. I kind of blew it off due to the recent Costa Rica experience – where one day my intuition was saying YES to staying, the next day it was a NO! Silly me.
My soul was yearning for a different life. I was 44 and my intuition was screaming “If not now, WHEN?” I’d been talking about living south of the border for 10 years. I went on vacation to Belize the Christmas of 2014… and I never returned.
MHL: What are/were the challenges or problems that you encountered when you made the big move?
Jyll Hoyrup: The reality of moving to Belize is (tragically) not all about beaches and sunset rum cocktails!
My parents didn’t get it. Most of my friends and acquaintances didn’t get it. Kudos to the few who did – probably because they heard all about the dream for YEARS! I remember one friend asked, “Why not just move to Arizona?”
It took me a loooooooooooong time to make friends and feel accepted by the other expat women. I get it, I’m very unique – I’m definitely not the norm or type that has moved there. Dating is virtually non-existent. I had never considered these could be a struggle.
I really had to work through the practicalities. HOW I was going to sustain myself? I had two days of anxiety after a week in Belize, wondering if I should stay. All I could do was listen to my intuition. I kept telling myself if I was pulled so strongly to do it in the first place, the rest would have to fall into place.
Belize doesn’t make it easy for you to work there (taking jobs from locals), nor could the locals afford me if I did work, so there went the ‘get a job’ plan. Regardless, I began the long process of becoming a legal Resident of Belize, which means I can legally work and pay taxes.
I needed to support myself, so I launched my online business, working as an energy healer as a means of sustaining my lifestyle. It was a sharp learning curve. I had to figure out how to get clients, what to charge, how the online world operates, but it’s growing all the time.
MHL: How did you make the career leap, from the corporate world to energy healing?
Jyll Hoyrup: Slowly! It was baby step by baby step. When I was introduced to energy healing in 2003 it opened a whole new world up to me. I considered it a hobby until it I finally admitted to myself that it was in my soul and I had to do it full time. I tried to build my business alongside my full-time job, but that didn’t work. Being in Belize helped me with that – literally catapulted me into living my soul purpose and truly authentic life.
Back in Seattle I had been working with manifestation for a couple of years and building my intuitive skills. Then in 2012 I came across 111® Activation. I booked myself in for a session and it truly changed my life. When I look back now, I can trace back all the positive changes in my personal journey to that single experience. It was in this session that I became fully aligned energetically to my soul purpose.
I delved deeper and studied 111 Activation as a passion project, I shared sessions with friends and even had a few private clients. It wasn’t exactly a steady income, but the work is so powerful and it had hugely positive impacts on people’s lives.
After moving to Belize and realising I couldn’t take a job I had the space to really delve into that side of myself. I realised that perhaps this was the calling I had been hearing all along! Being in Belize, away from my busy life, gave me the opportunity to go full-time with my energy and intuitive skills – something I would never have done if I’d stayed in Seattle. I started by offering sessions via video chat and it gradually grew from there.
My sessions cover whatever is happening in the client’s world at the time, maybe it’s clearing energetic blocks, or setting up energetic boundaries. I work with people with anxiety and depression, or who experience an energetic drain from situations or specific people. I work with 111 Activation and Universal Sphere modalities, they’re both forms of energetic healing and balancing.
MHL: Is this how you’ve supported yourself financially since moving to Belize?
Jyll Hoyrup: Initially I lived off the money I had saved and what came from selling everything. The amazing thing is that my work supports me emotionally and physically, the financial aspect came later, and has now grown to allow me to stay and continue my work.
It didn’t happen overnight though. My Business went through a lot of different phases and has morphed and changed as I grew and changed in my new life after moving to Belize.
As my video chat sessions became more in demand and my followers started to really grow, I created the ROAR community. To me, a roar is that feeling inside you, that inner passion, dream or vision that makes your heart sing. It’s at the core of who you are. That’s what I share with my community and in my private sessions.
I have now launched my weekly show, Manifest It. Manifest It is a great opportunity to connect in with the ROAR community, and an awesome introduction to my work for new people or those interested in starting out in manifestation.
MHL: What advice would you have for someone who feels trapped and uninspired and is dreaming of running away to a tropical island?
Jyll Hoyrup: My advice would be: Get honest with yourself, really feel into it. What in your life is working for you? What isn’t working for you? Write it all out in a pros and cons list.
Look at your cons list, could these be fixed or changed by a new job, location, or relationship? Because it could be as simple as that.
But if it is a constant yearning for something else you aren’t even fully aware of, a feeling like you are missing out on something or generally despising everything around you – then that gives you more information. Knowing yourself is key.
In order to find yourself, I recommend asking some different questions, like what really jazzes me up? What am I good at, what are my skills, what are some other ways I could use my skills? If I could move, where would I like to live? What do I enjoy doing?
Just start noticing your body’s reaction to these questions, feeeeeeeeeel into your answers. Start investigating. It doesn’t mean you are making a decision yet, you’re just feeling into things. Play with it.
I highly recommend any kind of energy healing. I spent years in therapy in my early 20’s and it was honestly very useful and helpful but it wasn’t until I got into energy healing and had regular sessions that I started seeing real changes in my life. You can talk all day, rehashing your life, but until you literally SHIFT those experiences out of your nervous system, you probably won’t make supernatural full-speed ahead progress!
Most of all, if your life isn’t filling you up with joy and positive energy I would work first on getting to know yourself, shifting through your thoughts, thinking about possibilities. I believe that each of us has the power to create our life the way we want – we are in the driver’s seat. There are so many tools we can use to manifest what we want, you just need to start small and take baby steps to get started.
MHL: You’ve been in Belize for 5 years, you’re all settled in now. What do you think your next adventure is going to be?
Jyll Hoyrup: I am currently on the path to discovering that! My big question right now is do I want to continue staying in Belize or not? Now that my business is up and running I have started getting intuitive messages that I can leave!!
Overall, my main focus is to help as many people as possible to tap into their intuition and use it in their everyday life. I’m on a mission to help people live authentically with passion and purpose.
I want people to be able to really gain trust and confidence in the messages they receive from their intuition. My whole life changed when I started doing that, now I can’t imagine my life without it. It is so important to use our gifts, not only to gain clarity in our life but to create a better more soul-aligned life for ourselves.
Anything is possible. If you can imagine it, you can become it. You ARE that powerful!
Are you ready to give it all up and join Jyll in Belize? I love the comments Jyll gives on the realities of moving to a developing nation, living in a place is a lot different to just being there on holidays. However most places have decent internet available, which opens the doors for taking your income generation online. If you have an interest or a passion that fills your spare time, could it be possible to turn this into an income generator? Jyll’s a great example of working out how to make the dream a reality instead of always listening to the reasons why you can’t!
You can tune in to Manifest It, Jyll’s weekly show to watch Jyll in action and start or deepen your own manifesting journey.
