The word on the street is that wellness retreats are where it’s at right now. Wellness retreats have gone fully mainstream, they’re no longer a euphemism for drug rehab… we’re now freely sharing Instagram snaps about our ah-may-zing holidays where we not only worked on our tans, we also found actual meaning in our life!
The wellness retreat industry has blown up everywhere from Adelaide to Zurich. Mainstream publications like Womens Health Magazine run regular wellness retreat features. Everyone’s doing it.
The 2018 Global Wellness Economy Monitor reported a 12% growth in the past two years making it one of the fastest growing travel segments.
The growing popularity of taking time out to focus on your health, wellness, de-stressing, detoxing and spiritual enquiry is not all due to social media… Hundreds of years ago people all across Europe travelled to spa towns like Bath in England or Budapest in Hungary to bathe in the natural spring waters that were thought to heal the body and nurture the soul. Likewise in India, ashrams (Hindi religious houses that host followers for periods of time) have been part of the culture forever.
Exclusive health resorts have been around for decades, catering to the rich and upper echelons of society, but now the concept is fanning out to include more budget friendly options and introducing the wellness retreat experience to a broader audience.
So the wellness holiday concept isn’t new, so what makes me think your next holiday will be a wellness retreat?
Well aside from all those fitness and wellness influencers that you follow on Instagram getting in your head with their amazing retreat shots…. Our hectic, ever connected lifestyles are driving a surge of interest in cutting ourselves off from the world for a break, our down times are being constantly infringed by our screens, our long work hours and our highly stressful living environments.
It’s no surprise then that the concept of giving yourself a break away from the madness should revolve around your wellness and spirituality. We just don’t have the time for it in our usual life!
So what is a wellness retreat in 2019?
A wellness retreat is a group holiday, where the focus of the schedule is on bringing healing, relaxation to the attendees. Each retreat is as different as it’s organisers, but many include yoga and meditation as well as healthy food and lots of down time. Retreats are most often held in places of exceptional natural beauty, by the sea, on a mountain or in a rainforest, compounding the feeling of unplugging from the outside world and getting back to nature, to your true self.
Who goes on a retreat?
Women everywhere have been fast to get on the retreat train. You will find that women currently represent the lion’s share of retreat attendees, and so retreats have tended to be aimed directly to them. But there’s a new growth in retreats aimed more broadly across the sexes. If this is you, then can I suggest you look into a surf and yoga retreat – a great blend of nature, sport, stretching and an easy blend of masculine and feminine energies.
Where’s the best place for a wellness retreat?
The growth in the wellness industry means you have wellness options both at home and far across the seas.
Places like Bali, Costa Rica, The Maldives were quick on the bandwagon. Likewise India, Sri Lanka and Thailand have very well established options available.
Ever on the lookout for the next big thing, Ecuador is the next big thing in wellness retreats, alongside Peru and Colombia offering yoga and shamanic ceremonies for deeper self-inquiry. Ibiza in Spain is preparing itself for a return to it’s wellness roots, and I’ve heard good things about the south coast of Cambodia as well.
Within Australia there are wonderful offerings in Byron Bay, Cairns, the Blue Mountains and in the Barossa Valley…. In fact there are wellness retreat options that don’t even require you to take more than just your weekend off work, right in your city.
So how do I know that your next holiday will be a wellness retreat?
Well, the odds are in my favour. The growth of the industry, the burgeoning stress of modern, ever connected life, the growth of interest in self-guided spirituality…. A good retreat will bring you a chance to get the most out of your time off work, true recuperation. It will give you the fuel to take on the world again and the tools to take your life to the next level. As well as give you amazing Instagram pics!!
If it’s not on your list right now… it soon will be!
